ă (cat) • ĕ (bed) • ĭ (pig) • ŏ (hop) • ŭ (cup)
✨ Magic 'E' / Long Vowels
The silent e at the end tells the first vowel to say its own name:
ā (cake) • ē (feet) • ī (kite) • ō (home) • ū (cute)
Part 1 Read each short vowel word. Add the silent Magic 'e' to make a long vowel word, then write it on the line.

📊 Phonics Diagnostic Rubric & Teacher Observation Matrix
⭐ Master (22–25 pts)
Effortlessly distinguishes short vs. long vowel phonemes. Understands how silent 'e' transforms vowel pronunciation.
👍 Developing (18–21 pts)
Reads CVC words accurately, but occasionally forgets to elongate vowels when silent 'e' is present. Needs ladder practice.
⚠️ Needs Focus (<18 pts)
Confuses vowel sounds. Recommended for personalized guided reading sessions at our Project 8 Learning Center.
💡 Pedagogical Insight: When teaching the Magic 'e' rule, have the child physically tap the silent 'e' with their finger and say: “Magic E pinches the vowel to make it shout its name!” This multisensory anchor prevents premature phonetic guessing.
