📊 Early Literacy Diagnostic Rubric & Teacher Observation Matrix
⭐ Master Reader (28–32 pts)
Flawlessly identifies book anatomy, sequences 3-step story events in chronological order, and accurately differentiates problems from solutions.
👍 Developing (22–27 pts)
Knows author vs. illustrator roles. Can sequence with signal words (First/Next/Last), but occasionally needs guidance identifying the central problem.
⚠️ Needs Guidance (<22 pts)
Confuses author and illustrator or swaps story sequence. Recommended for PERSONALIZED guided literacy coaching at our Project 8 Learning Center.
💡 Pedagogical Insight: When introducing story structure to early readers, use physical gestures: tap your forehead for the Beginning (characters thinking/starting), clap hands for the Middle (action/climax), and fold hands peacefully for the End (solution & resolution). This multisensory cue grounds narrative comprehension naturally.
