LETTER BODY
TAIL HANGS HERE
These letters have a TAIL that hangs BELOW the baseline (the writing line)!

🧠 Muscle Memory Teaching Tips
• 3-Repetition Rule: Have the child trace each letter at least 3 times in a row before picking up the pencil. This encodes the motor pathway.
• Eyes Closed Variation: After mastering with eyes open, have them trace with eyes closed — this deepens kinesthetic memory!
• Sand Tray: Draw the letter in a tray of sand or flour to simulate the actual sandpaper letter experience.
• Verbal + Motor: Always say the sound WHILE tracing. This builds the phoneme-grapheme connection simultaneously.
🎤 Correct Phoneme Sounds
• c → /k/ — a short, crisp stop: “cuh” (NOT “see”)
• m → /m/ — lips together, hum: “mmm”
• n → /n/ — tongue behind teeth: “nnn”
• s → /s/ — air through teeth: “sss”
• g → /g/ — back of throat: “guh” (NOT “jee”)
• j → /dʒ/ — voiced: “juh”
• p → /p/ — puff of air: “puh”
• y → /j/ — glide sound: “yuh” (as in “yes”)
📋 Tutor Diagnostic Milestones — Sandpaper Letters & Pre-Writing Readiness
• Muscle Memory Established: Can the child trace the correct stroke direction from memory without looking at the numbered steps?
• Sound-Symbol Link: When shown any of the 8 letters, does the child immediately produce the phoneme sound (not the letter name)?
• Descender Awareness: Does the child allow the tail of g, j, p, y to hang below the baseline naturally? Correcting this too early causes reversal habits.
• Tutor Tip: If a child writes “p” as “q” or “j” reversed, return to sandpaper tracing — the muscle memory from tracing physically re-routes the motor pattern before pencil habits solidify.
