📌 Skill 1: Multiplying Thousands by 1-Digit (4-Digit × 1-Digit)
Multiply right to left — Ones → Tens → Hundreds → Thousands. Write the regrouped (carry) digit above the next column and add it after multiplying.
5,347
x 8
--------
42,776
• Step 1 (Ones): 8 × 7 = 56 → write 6, carry 5
• Step 2 (Tens): (8 × 4) + 5 = 37 → write 7, carry 3
• Step 3 (Hundreds): (8 × 3) + 3 = 27 → write 7, carry 2
• Step 4 (Thousands): (8 × 5) + 2 = 42 → write 42 → Final: 42,776
• Step 2 (Tens): (8 × 4) + 5 = 37 → write 7, carry 3
• Step 3 (Hundreds): (8 × 3) + 3 = 27 → write 7, carry 2
• Step 4 (Thousands): (8 × 5) + 2 = 42 → write 42 → Final: 42,776
📌 Skill 2: Multiplying by 2 Digits (3-Digit × 2-Digit) with Partial Products
Write two partial products. Multiply by the ones digit first, then by the tens digit — and remember the zero placeholder on the second line!
526
x 73
--------
1,578 (526 x 3)
+ 36,820 (526 x 70)
--------
38,398
• Line 1 (Ones digit 3): 526 × 3 = 1,578
• Line 2 (Tens digit 7): Write 0 first. Then 526 × 7 = 3,682 → becomes 36,820
• Line 3 (Add): 1,578 + 36,820 = 38,398
• Line 2 (Tens digit 7): Write 0 first. Then 526 × 7 = 3,682 → becomes 36,820
• Line 3 (Add): 1,578 + 36,820 = 38,398
⚡ Speed & Mastery Golden Rules:
1. Write Carries Clearly: Write carried digits small above the next column so you never forget to add them!
2. Zero Placeholder in Line 2: When multiplying by the tens digit, always write the 0 placeholder under the ones column before multiplying across.
