๐Ÿงช MATATAG Math Concept Guide: Measures of Capacity (Kapasidad) Quarter 2 โ€ข Measurement

Capacity is the amount of liquid a container can hold. In the metric system, the standard units are Liter (L) for large containers and milliliter (mL) for smaller amounts.

๐Ÿ’ง The Golden Conversion Bridge
1 Liter (L) = 1,000 milliliters (mL)
"Milli" means one-thousandth (1/1,000). Exactly 1,000 mL fill a 1-Liter bottle!
๐Ÿ”ผ Larger to Smaller (L → mL)
Multiply by 1,000 (× 1,000)
Example: 4 L × 1,000 = 4,000 mL
2 L 350 mL = 2,000 + 350 = 2,350 mL
๐Ÿ”ฝ Smaller to Larger (mL → L)
Divide by 1,000 (÷ 1,000)
Example: 7,000 mL ÷ 1,000 = 7 L
5,800 mL = 5 L 800 mL
๐Ÿฅ„ Teaspoon: 5 mL ๐Ÿฅ› Water Glass: 250 mL ๐Ÿฅค Juice Bottle: 500 mL ๐Ÿซ– Water Pitcher: 2 L (2,000 mL) ๐Ÿชฃ Blue Water Gallon: 18.9 L (~19 L)

๐Ÿ’ก Diagnostic Remediation Guide for Tutors & Parents:
โ€ข Place Value Zeros Trap: Students often write 3 L 50 mL = 350 mL or 3,500 mL. Teach them that 1 L = 1,000 mL, which has three decimal places / three zeros. So 50 mL must be written with a leading zero: 3 L 50 mL = 3,000 + 50 = 3,050 mL. Likewise, 3 L 5 mL = 3,005 mL.
โ€ข Borrowing Across Units: When subtracting 6 L 200 mL − 2 L 750 mL, students cannot do 200 − 750. Remind them to borrow 1 L = 1,000 mL from 6 L, making it 5 L and 1,200 mL. Then 1,200 − 750 = 450 mL and 5 − 2 = 3 L, yielding 3 L 450 mL!
