📌 Key Highlights: The Golden Rules of Pronouns
• Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement: Pronouns must agree with their antecedents (the noun they replace) in number (singular/plural), gender (masculine, feminine, neuter), and person.
• Subject-Verb Agreement: Verbs must agree with subject pronouns performing the action.
⚡ Simply put:
  • Singular subject pronoun = singular verb (adds -s/-es)
  • Plural subject pronoun = plural verb (base form)
1. Subject Pronoun The "Doer"
Acts as the subject of the sentence
Performs the action. Appears at the beginning of a sentence or clause before the verb.
I, he, she, it, you, they, we
Ex: She reads the book quietly.
2. Object Pronoun The "Receiver"
Receives the action in the sentence
Follows an action verb or preposition (to, for, with, at, about).
me, him, her, it, you, them, us
Ex: The teacher called them outside.
3. Possessive Pronoun The "Owner"
Substitutes a noun showing ownership
Replaces the noun completely and stands alone without an apostrophe!
mine, his, hers, yours, theirs, ours
Ex: That blue backpack is mine.
Person & Number Subject Pronoun (Doer) Object Pronoun (Receiver) Possessive Pronoun (Owner)
1st Person Singular I me mine
3rd Person Singular (Masculine) he him his
3rd Person Singular (Feminine) she her hers
3rd Person Singular (Thing/Neuter) it it —
2nd Person (Singular & Plural) you you yours
3rd Person Plural they them theirs
1st Person Plural we us ours
🔍 Study This Example (Sentence Anatomy):
"Monica took a bite of her cake, and Ivann bit on his too."
🔹
Pronoun: his (Possessive Pronoun, replaces "Ivann's cake").
🔹
Antecedent: Ivann (The noun that the pronoun refers back to).
🔹
Agreement in Number: Ivann is singular, so his is singular.
🔹
Agreement in Gender: Ivann is male, so masculine pronoun his is used.
⚡ Quick Warm-up: Identify the Pronoun Type
1. We love reading Filipino fables. [ Subject ]
2. Uncle Leo gave him a new telescope. [ Object ]
3. The pencil on the teacher's desk is hers. [ Possessive ]
