⛵ The Day at Joy Bay
Ray and Joy went to Joy Bay on a bright sunny day. Ray rode on a big green boat with a clean white sail. The cool sea breeze blew as soft white clouds floated in the sky.

Joy stood on the wooden dock and looked down. She found a round shiny coin in the wet soil! "Look at my coin!" said Joy with joy.

At noon, they sat under a tall oak tree to eat sweet peach pie. Then they saw a brown hawk fly high up into the blue sky. It was a joyful day at the bay!

Grade 1 Reading Diagnostic Rubric (DepEd MATATAG Aligned) Assessment
Skill Level Observed Reading & Decoding Behavior Recommended Next Step
Mastery (85%–100%) Decodes vowel teams (ai, ea, ee, oa) and diphthongs (oi/oy, ou/ow) as single phonetic units without sounding out separate letters; reads decodable story at 50+ WPM. Advance directly to Level 9: R-Controlled Vowels (Bossy R: ar, er, ir, or, ur) and two-syllable chunking.
Developing (60%–84%) Occasionally segments individual vowel letters (e.g., /b/... /o/... /a/... /t/); confuses double 'oo' short vs. long sounds. Review vowel team chants and practice auditory sorting with word cards and highlight markers.
Beginning (<60%) Applies short vowel rules to vowel teams (reads 'rain' as 'ran'); relies on guessing from picture cues. Revisit Level 7 (Silent E); practice tactile vowel team cards with the 'two vowels walking' mnemonic.
