📘 Study Guide
Review these core mathematical concepts, strategies, and rules before taking the diagnostic assessment on the following pages!
🔢 1. Place Value & Value (up to 1,000)
• Place Value: Position of a digit (Hundreds, Tens, Ones).
• Value: Numerical worth based on position.
Example: In 584:
- Digit 5 is in Hundreds place → Value = 500
- Digit 8 is in Tens place → Value = 800... wait, 80
- Digit 4 is in Ones place → Value = 4
• Value: Numerical worth based on position.
Example: In 584:
- Digit 5 is in Hundreds place → Value = 500
- Digit 8 is in Tens place → Value = 800... wait, 80
- Digit 4 is in Ones place → Value = 4
Expanded Form: 584 = 500 + 80 + 4
➕ 2. Addition & Regrouping (Carrying)
• Always start adding from the Ones column first.
• If the sum in a column is 10 or more, carry over 1 to the next column on the left.
Example: 47 + 38
- Ones: 7 + 8 = 15 (Write 5, carry 1 ten)
- Tens: 1 + 4 + 3 = 8 tens → Sum = 85
• If the sum in a column is 10 or more, carry over 1 to the next column on the left.
Example: 47 + 38
- Ones: 7 + 8 = 15 (Write 5, carry 1 ten)
- Tens: 1 + 4 + 3 = 8 tens → Sum = 85
Check: Always add carried digits first!
➖ 3. Subtraction & Regrouping (Borrowing)
• "More on the floor? Go next door!"
If the top digit is smaller than the bottom digit, borrow 1 ten from the column to the left.
Example: 62 - 27
- Ones: 2 < 7 (Borrow 1 ten from 6 tens. 6 becomes 5; 2 becomes 12).
- 12 - 7 = 5 ones; 5 - 2 = 3 tens → Diff = 35.
✖️ 4. Multiplication & Equal Groups
• Multiplication is Repeated Addition:
3 groups of 4 stars = 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 stars.
• Written as multiplication: 3 × 4 = 12.
• Arrays: 3 rows of 5 dots = 3 × 5 = 15 dots.
3 groups of 4 stars = 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 stars.
• Written as multiplication: 3 × 4 = 12.
• Arrays: 3 rows of 5 dots = 3 × 5 = 15 dots.
💡 5. Philippine Currency, Time & CUBES Problem Solving
• Philippine Money: ₱100 + ₱50 = ₱150; ₱1.00 = 100 centavos.
• Fractions: 1/2 (Half - 1 of 2 equal parts), 1/4 (Quarter - 1 of 4 equal parts).
• Clock Time: Short hand = Hour; Long hand = Minute (Count minutes by 5s).
• Fractions: 1/2 (Half - 1 of 2 equal parts), 1/4 (Quarter - 1 of 4 equal parts).
• Clock Time: Short hand = Hour; Long hand = Minute (Count minutes by 5s).
• CUBES Problem-Solving Strategy:
- Circle key numbers.
- Underline the question.
- Box math clue words (in all, remaining, left, total).
- Evaluate & solve step-by-step.
