Criteria Developing (1 pt) Proficient (2 pts) Mastery (3 pts)
Object Choice & Drawing Drawings are unclear; objects cannot be identified easily. Two recognizable objects are drawn and labeled with help. Two clear everyday objects are drawn with discernible details and labeled independently.
Similarity Concept Identifies an inaccurate or irrelevant feature. Identifies one basic shared trait (e.g., both are round, both are red). Accurately explains a meaningful shared trait or function (e.g., both are school supplies).
Difference Concept Names only one object without contrasting it. States one contrasting feature (e.g., this is big, that is small). Clearly articulates contrast using comparative words (e.g., one is plastic while the other is paper).
Handwriting & Lines Letters ignore guide lines; difficult to read. Letters mostly stay within primary lines with some drift. Letters correctly align with top, middle dashed, and bottom baseline.
💡 Teacher & Parent Facilitation Questions:
• "What do we do with both of them?" (Helps the child discover functional similarities).
• "How do they feel in your hands or look to your eyes?" (Helps identify sensory differences in texture, shape, or weight).
• Sentence Frames: Encourage Grade 1 learners to say: "They are both..." and "This one is ____, but that one is ____."
